Nederland city leaders are working to make it easier for food truck owners to set up shop

The new regulation allows anyone to apply for this special permit, and the second change would allow food truck vendors to set up food trucks all year long.

NEDERLAND, Texas — Nederland city leaders, food truck owners and restaurant owners have been working diligently over the last six months to loosen the city's current food truck regulations.

"You're allowed a special event or temporary permit so you can have one a month, so 12 a year, and it's limited to just food trucks that are operated or owned by a business owner in Nederland or a resident of Nederland," Nederland City Manager Chris Duque told 12News.

The new regulation allows anyone to apply for this special permit, and the second change would allow food truck vendors to set up food trucks all year long, according to Duque.

However, there are other restrictions.

For instance, only eight of these permits will be issued a year and it will cost $500. Also the trucks can park within 200 feet of a restaurant, but only if they have written consent from the owner.

"If it's not your property you still have to get approval from them and they've talked to us about making some public property available," Duque said.

12News spoke with two local restaurant owners who support the new proposals.

"They can't block parking lots, they can't block traffic so thankfully within 2,000 feet of me there's nowhere that fits that bill," Said Al Judice owner of Judice's 1927.

The Dude's Foods owner Keith Bass is exited to see less restrictions on what helped him establish his own place.

"I want to see everybody grow because having that food truck allowed me to now have a brick and mortar," Bass told 12News.
