BISD mom says she fears for her son's safety after rash of school fights

"BISD needs to do something" | Mom responds to safety concerns at M.L. King Middle School

BEAUMONT, Texas — EDITORS NOTE: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that a district spokesperson said students had been suspended.

A Beaumont mother is speaking out, saying she fears for her son's safety at M.L. King Middle School.

Her comments come after several fights at the school last week.

"The violence at King is outrageous," the mom, who didn't want to be identified, told 12News

Beaumont ISD officials said there were six fights at the school on November 6.

Multiple students have been suspended from the school according to the Beaumont Enterprise.

"It is unfortunate that six incidents took place at ML King Middle School," the district told 12News in an emailed statement. "The incidents that occurred were expeditiously investigated, parents were contacted and disciplinary action was taken."

The parent who spoke with 12News says there may have been as many as 13 fights last Wednesday. Her son was one of the students suspended.

She believes the problems at King Middle stem from Tropical Storm Imelda. After the storm, some students at South Park Middle were transferred to King Middle. The transfer was made so that freshmen at Beaumont United, which flooded during the storm, could hold classes at South Park Middle.

"Combining those schools is not good," the concerned mom said. "It was the worst thing they could have done. You created chaos."

King Middle will host a meeting for parents Tuesday morning to discuss their concerns. That meeting is set at 9 a.m.

12News submitted an open records request with BISD officials to find out how many assaults have happened at King Middle this school year. We are still waiting for those numbers from the district.

"The district does not condone any type of violence," the BISD statement said. "It is in our practice to do our best to de-escalate situations and take a proactive approach to discipline by teaching Foundations and CHAMPS to our staff and students. We ask that parents partner with us in teaching that fighting is not a proper form of conflict resolution. As always, the safety of our staff and students is a top priority of Beaumont ISD."
