At least two injured in house fire near China

Multiple fire units are on the scene and are working to try to quell the flames.

CHINA, Texas — A house fire started on 654 North Meeker Road according to Daniel Diaz with Jefferson county ESD 3.

The fire started at around 4 p.m. according to Diaz.

Multiple fire units were on the scene and are working to try to quell the flames.

Two elderly people sustained injuries from the fire and were rushed to the hospital according to Sherriff Zena Stephens.

Sheriff Stephens also says that they did have a deputy already in the area when they first received a call about the fire.

"Fortunately someone saw the house, saw the smoke, and saw the fire and the other fortunate thing is we had people in the area," said Stephens.

That deputy was able to quickly rescue one of the people that were trapped inside.

Chief Jody Herrera and his firefighters arrived soon after, and crews were able to save another person.

"When the fire chief from ESD 1 got on scene he was able to give a better report and that's when they went in and made the rescue," said Herrera. "My crews from ESD 3 went in and got the second elderly person out and got them transported to the hospital."

Chief Herrera says both of the people were taken to the hospital in critical condition.

"They're in serious condition right now. We'll know later about their conditions as they progress. Hopefully they'll do well," said Herrera.

After the house was cleared, it took firefighters from emergency districts one, two, three and four several more hours to finally put out the flames.

"With an older-type wood structure, it's going to burn fairly easy because it's probably from the fifties, maybe the sixties when that structure was built," said Herrera. "It is under control. The guys are doing a really good job, and this humidity and heat is taking a toll on them."

During that time, Meeker Road had been completely blocked off according to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.
