PORT ARTHUR, Texas — Memorial High School recieved $10,000 from Texas A&M University's Center on Disability and Development (CDD) to create a work-based learning project.
The project will benefit special education students.
The check presentation took place on Tuesday, November 19 at 8:45 a.m. at the Port Arthur Independent School District Administration Building.
Port Arthur ISD wants to create a new work-based learning (WBL) model that aligns with Memorial's CTE Campus Culinary Arts & Hospitality program.
This will focus on modeling and supervising students with disabilities in baking and selling cookies on campuses one day each week.
The A&M WBL gives opportunities to high school students with disabilities in Texas, according to the university's website.
"We work with selected high schools to implement one or more WBL programs, with an emphasis on school-based enterprises, to provide students authentic work experience in integrated settings. Through a competitive application process, project staff select high schools, help them refine their WBL project for implementation, and provide funding, staff training, and support so that students can learn and practice employment skills. The project is designed to support school-based enterprises," the website explains.
