A game warden at McFaddin Beach saw Gay trying to commit suicide Dec. 1 around 4 p.m., Jefferson County Sheriff's office said. He fled from the game warden in his vehicle, left his car and ran into the water.
Gay was last seen by the game warden about 200 yards out into the Gulf of Mexico. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office's Marine Unit conducted a search and brought a helicopter on scene.
When deputies resumed the search around 8 a.m. Sunday morning, two people walking on the beach about 12 miles south of the McFaddin Wildlife Refuge entrance told investigators they discovered Gay's body washed up on shore.
