Lumberton elementary students learn about the Great American Eclipse

LUMBERTON, Texas — On Friday, students at Lumberton Primary School got to learn about the Great American Eclipse.

They observed the day as Fantastic Friday where students jumped from station to station learning about the phenomenon.

The kids were able to learn about the topic through hands on activities. These activities included making models of the sun coverage, creating pinhole projectors to view the eclipse and even creating chalk art.

Science Curriculum Coordinator Sheryl Dunham says the students may not be familiar with what an eclipse is, but now they are loving the topic.

"They are 100% engaged in what they are doing. They are loving it, I think most of them hadn't heard about an eclipse before now they may have seen it on the news, but I kind of doubt it, so their learning," she said. “By doing hands on activities, we're increasing student's depth of knowledge for the topic. They are actually understanding what's happening. That the moon is going to move in front of the sun and block the sun's rays."

Clouds or not, all Lumberton Independent School District students will receive glasses to hopefully see the Great American Eclipse.
