LUMBERTON, Texas — Teacher and substitute teacher shortages are affecting the nation and one of those districts impacted is right in Southeast Texas.
Lumberton Independent School District is offering job incentives and bumping pay to keep this shortage from impacting their students.
They are looking to fill classrooms with qualified adults who have a passion for education.
Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Anna Miller says it's been rough to find the right fit.
"We have a drastic need for substitutes and that's for every district in our area, so our employees are absent for sickness of course also for training professional development that we offer," she said.
Starting pay for subs vary based on education level, but you aren't required to have a degree.
The pay ranges from $70 to $90 per day and the schedule is flexible.
"You are in charge of your own schedule, so if you can't work a day hey that's great, go do what you need to do it's not a big deal. So, you are able to accept openings as they come up," Miller said.
Peanut Whitaker says the flexibility is on the the reasons she's sub, but she also loves the people she works with.
"Teachers come in and check up on you through out the day and give direction if they feel that it is something that's needed. So, everyone is so supportive, and helpful," Whitaker said.
There's also extra incentives Lumberton ISD is offering to keep good subs around.
The district's 90-day incentive program bumps sub's rates up $10 for every 90 days they complete
"We not only want to acknowledge their performance and loyalty to the district which we can show monetarily," Miller said.
If you have a love for kids, a clean record and a high school diploma, you are encouraged to apply.
The district is offering a substitute teacher course Thursday, January 12, 2023 at the administrative office at 9 a.m.
