BEAUMONT — It's been almost a year since Everett Mitchell Jr. was shot and killed. Mitchell's family and friends gathered Saturday to celebrate the life he lived.
According to a 12News file story,Mitchell was shot in the 5000 block of Brace Drive on August 13th, 2017.
Mitchell's mother Ida remembers the day her son's life was cut short like it was yesterday. She said it's her faith and loved ones who keep her going on the bad days.
"To lose a child, I don't wish that on nobody, not one soul do I wish that on," said Ida Mitchell.
She said the man accused of taking her son's life was once a friend. He still has not gone to trial. Mitchell says she holds no hate for the family of the accused, but justice needs to be served for her son; and for the daughter he left behind.
"He wasn't just taken from his mom, he was taken from an 8-year-old," said Mitchell.
Today, however, wasn't about the closure they continue to seek. It was about a celebration of his life, and how he lived.
"He was happy, he was joyful, he was who he was, didn't try to be anyone he wasnt," said Mitchell.
Mitchell said she's never claimed her son was without fault, but his family could rely on him for anything.
"My son was the greatest to his family, it was about family for him," said Mitchell.
