Louisiana State Police investigating fatal officer-involved shooting in Sulphur

Police say shots were fired during a struggle between the suspect and officers.

SULPHUR, La. — Louisiana State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that left a man dead Thursday afternoon in Sulphur.

Police identified the man as Mark Hayden Jr., 37, of Sulphur.

Sulphur police officers were sent to an address on South Kent Dr. after receiving reports about a domestic disturbance.

When officers got there, they discovered that the suspect ran away from the scene possibly carrying a handgun.

In a social media post just after 4 p.m., Sulphur police urged residents in the area of South Kent Drive and Ginger Street to stay inside, keep doors locked and be alert as police searched for the man.

Police described the suspect as a white male who was believed to be wearing black shorts, no shirt and armed, according to a previous social media update from the Sulphur Police Department.

Officers placed a perimeter around the area and started looking for the man.

Police located him in a nearby shed at around 5:20 p.m. Thursday evening.

During a struggle between the suspect and officers at the 600 block of South Kent St., shots were fired. The man was shot and pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

No officers were harmed during the incident.

The Louisiana State Police are investigating the shooting and more information will be released later.

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office Forensics Unit assisted in processing the scene.
