BEAUMONT, Texas — A Lamar University spokesperson said she's been made aware of a sexual assault allegation a student recently made on Twitter.
The alleged victim called out her attacked on Twitter, saying she was sexually assaulted by another Lamar student.
On Wednesday, 12News spoke with Lamar University spokesperson Shelly Vitanza, who said she knows about the claims, but isn't able to release much information since the investigation is ongoing.
It's unclear if the alleged sexual assault happened on Lamar University's campus or somewhere else.
"Lamar University takes all allegations of sexual assault seriously and has policies and procedures in place to investigate these complaints and take the appropriate action based on the results," Vitanza said. "We are currently making all resources, including emotional and mental counseling, available to both students."
According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation's website, there were three rape cases reported back in 2018 and two in 2017.
Since the original tweet, several other women have taken to Twitter to make similar claims against other students.
Vitanza said this was an isolated incident and assured 12News that students shouldn't fear for their safety.
