Lamar University integrating cameras into Beaumont Police Department's 'Fusus System'

LUPD Sergeant Byron Popillion says the Beaumont Police Department will have full access to more than 100 cameras along the perimeter of campus.

BEAUMONT, Texas — Lamar University is taking student safety a step further by integrating its cameras with the Beaumont Police Department's Fusus camera system.

"That advancement with the LUPD (Lamar University Police Department), it just makes it even better for us to be safe," said Andy Nguyen, a freshman at LU.

LUPD Sergeant Byron Popillion says the Beaumont Police Department will have full access to more than 100 cameras along the perimeter of campus.

"The cameras that will be apart of the Fusus System, will mainly be the ones that point out towards neighborhoods, roadways thing that could help BPD. For example, if there was a chase coming," said Popillion.

It's beneficial if trouble were to happen on campus.

"Right now if something were to happen on campus, once that individual person is off campus we don't have a way to track them other than physically following that person," Popillion said.

BPD will be able to pick up where Lamar's cameras leave off to help catch suspects sooner.

"So they won't be any delay in either us, having to call BPD and let them know what's going on, or BPD having to call us and let us know what's going on," said Popillion.

The staff agree that this is a great move to increase campus security.

"I think it really increases our security for on our campus for our students and for our employees especially when they get off work at night and walk to their cars," said Rich Cooper, a brand ambassador for Chick-fil-A.

It's a welcomed extra step especially in the wake of a recent shooting and robbery at at two Houston universities.

"It is an unfortunate circumstance, I would tell any student if you notice a change in your partner let us know," said Popillion.

Sergeant Popillion says the university is still in the process of integrating the cameras, and they plan to have it finished by this fall.
