JEFFERSON COUNTY, Texas — The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a man who is trying to scam people out of their money.

The sheriff's office says that a man is calling and identifying himself as as a Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Deputy. The scammer claims that he has a confidential legal matter to discuss with you.

They tell you that you owe a fine and a warrant will be issued for your arrest if you do not pay it. Scammers usually instruct the victim to purchase a cash card and take care of the fine by phone. Once you purchase the cards and give the scammer your information, your money is taken.

JCSO is reminding people to never immediately go to the store and purchase a cash card to pay someone over the phone. Law enforcement agencies will never ask for money over the phone for any reason.

They say the phone numbers appear to be coming from the 409 area code however, spoof apps can make a call appear from anywhere.

Never give anyone who calls you your personal nor financial information.
