'Do what we can'| Jefferson County Salvation Army helping families in need

Entergy gifted the Salvation Army 89,000 dollars last year to help families with utility bills.

BEAUMONT, Texas — The Jefferson County Salvation Army is helping families in need with rent and utility bills in order to lower the risk of being evicted.

Entergy gifted the Salvation Army 89,000 dollars last year to help families using Entergy service with utility bills.

"Many folks are just one crisis away from finding themselves in real need," said Salvation Army Major Ken Fagan.

The Salvation Army is doubling down on efforts to help families in need.

"We're assisting 10, 15, 20 families in a month," said Major Fagan.

The non-profit has 14,000 dollars in utility assistance for people who use Entergy and each family can get up to 150 dollars of the funds.

"We don't want anyone to have to live in the cold or in the heat, and we're gonna be here to do what we can," he said.

The money came in handy for a single mom who needed help covering the cost of bills.

"And so she came to us, had a conversation with us and said here's my situation and so we were able to keep her lights on for her and her 7 year old son."

The Salvation Army is also offering rental assistance for people who live in Port Arthur. They still have 25,000 dollars available in funds.

"Homeless prevention that's what we want to do, we want to keep folks from being put out on the streets," said Major Fagan. "So if we can provide a rent payment that'll keep them going, and knowing that they got the rest of it covered for the months going forward, that's great."

Each home can receive 900 dollars towards rent.

"We encourage them to call again have a conversation with the case worker," he said. "Find out what identification and verification is needed and make an appointment and have the conversation."
