NEDERLAND, Texas — Southeast Texas law enforcement agencies spent the day educating students on the dangers of fentanyl.
For two days Jefferson County officials have been giving presentations at Nederland Independent School District and they're sharing the message that "one pill kills" with thousands of students.
Students at NISD were taking in the impact the fentanyl epidemic has made in Southeast Texas.
"This is just the first step if we don't get these individuals and realize the dangers of this drug then we are gonna fail at our mission," said Executive Assistant District Attorney Brit Featherston.
The Jefferson County District Attorney used real stories of people, including children, who have died due to a fentanyl overdose.
They're hoping to get through to kids from middle school to high school to help save lives.
"It's our goal to reach all of our school districts, talk to all the kids. Talk to the parents so they can talk to the kids. And get this message across that this deadly chemical is killing five Texans a day, 300 people a day across the nation," Featherston said.
County leaders spoke with more than 3,000 students in the past two days. With the help of other Southeast Texas agencies they're hoping to spread this important message to as many young people as possible.
"The kids in Nederland, we've just done this time, we have been to Beaumont and going to Port Arthur in the future. We went to Hamshire-Fannett to share the importance of the trending drugs and vaping to just stay away from those things and stay safe," said Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Donte Miller.
The agencies are planning to continue their tour of school districts and next on their list is Port Arthur.
