Jasper woman, 21, dies after ATV crash

Troopers were called to the accident around 7 p.m.

JASPER COUNTY, Texas — DPS confirms a woman has died in an ATV crash in Jasper County.

Jalia Franklin, 21, of Jasper was driving the ATV that crashed Sunday night, May 13.

Franklin, a graduate of Newton High School, was known for her athletic abilities. She placed seventh in state in the 100 meter hurdle event in 2014 as a freshman and sixth in the state in long jump as a senior in 2017.  

Franklin ran track for Cowley College on the 2018 women's team. Franklin was also part of the women's track team at Jarvis Christian Christian College's in 2019. 

Franklin was transported to Jasper Memorial Hospital after the accident on Sunday night, but did not survive her injuries. She was pronounced deceased at the hospital by emergency room personnel.

There are no additional details available at this time.

The crash occurred on County Road 96 west of FM 2800 around 7 p.m., Texas DPS Sgt. Stephanie Davis said in a news release.

The woman was driving, and was taken to Jasper Memorial Hospital, but didn't survive her injuries according to the release. 

The passenger, a 14-year-old boy from Jasper was also taken to the hospital, Davis said. 

The driver was traveling at an unsafe speed and took a sharp curve, according to the release. The ATV flipped several times, and the driver was partially ejected. 

Davis said his injuries do not appear to be life threatening.

At approximately 7:00p.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Troopers responded to an ATV crash on CR 096 in Jasper County.  The crash occurred just West of FM 2800.

Preliminary reports indicate that an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) was traveling on FM 2800 and turned onto CR 096.  The driver was traveling at an unsafe speed as she entered a sharp curve. The vehicle flipped several times before coming to rest.  The driver was partially ejected from the ATV.

The driver, a 21-year-old female from Jasper, was transported to Jasper Memorial hospital.  However, she did not survive her injuries and was pronounced deceased by emergency room personnel.

The passenger, a 14-year-old male from Jasper, was also transported to Jasper Memorial hospital.  His injuries did not appear to be life threatening.

The name of the deceased will not be released until the next of kin has been notified.

All information is preliminary as Troopers continue to investigate this fatal crash.  There are no additional details available at this time.
