JASPER, Texas — The Jasper City manager will be retiring after working for the city for 20 years she announced recently.
In a letter to the Jasper City Council dated, October 12, 2023, Denise Kelley informed the council of her plans to retire as of January 12, 2024.
Kelley noted in the letter that January 2024 will mark her 20th anniversary of working for the city.
“The last twenty years have been challenging at times, but I want to think we have all learned and thrived through every event,” she said in the letter.
She included a list of major events the city had “survived” during her tenure, including…
- Hurricane Rita 2005
- Hundred-year flood – 2006
- Five-hundred-year flood – 2006
- Hurricane Ike 2008
- Hurricane Harvey 2017
- Hurricane Laura 2020
- Five hundred -year flood 2020
- Ice Storm 2020
- Covid --- 2020 -2021
In her position as city manager, Kelley also served as the city’s finance director and in her resignation letter also noted that the city is in a “great financial position.”
She ended her letter saying “thank you again for allowing me to be a part of ‘The Jewel of the Forest.’"
