Orange County begins gradual cleanup of Imelda debris, officials waiting for FEMA help

According to Orange County Judge John Gothia, they're still waiting for FEMA reimbursements for Imelda debris pickup.

ORANGE COUNTY, Texas — Loads of debris still cover many front lawns in Orange County after Imelda flooded homes.

It's happened before for David Bickerton.

He said his home "flooded once in Harvey and now this one."

Like a lot of people in the Maplecrest Neighborhood in Vidor, Bickerton said he's ready for someone to get all the trash and debris left behind.

"I figured it would be a while and decided to push it myself in the end of my lot," Bickerton said.

According to Orange County Judge John Gothia, they're still waiting for FEMA reimbursements for Imelda debris pickup, which includes the cost of hiring special contractors.

Gothia said without FEMA assistance, it makes the process much slower.

Businesses like Moore's Mini Storage off of I-10 are also struggling to get the mess off their property. Kasidi Tahbodeaux works at the facility.

"All of our office got hit along with all of our storage units," Tahbodeaux said. "A lot of our customers got hit, we've had to watch them empty out their belongings that they all worked so hard to get after Harvey and now it's hanging by the road."

According to Gothia, the county road and bridge department crews, along with TxDOT have already been picking up some debris from damaged homes. Bickerton said without FEMA's help, he knows it could take a while.

"Just to see your debris gone in front of your house is a bigger relief because it's not a everyday reminder when you walk outside and see," Bickerton said.
