BOLIVAR PENINSULA, Texas — On the Bolivar Peninsula in Galveston County, more than 6,200 customers are still without power.
Entergy crews have been racing to restore power and clear power-poles from Highway 87. Around 5:30 p.m. April Loftin, the President of the High Island Volunteer Fire Department told 12News that the highway has been reopened.
Entergy crews are working fast to turn the power back on and are saying it's a process that could take days.
"A whole lot of Entergy trucks. They are coming in, getting ready to set those poles and get everything back and ruining as quick as they possibly can," said Loftin.
Vacationers are trying to make the best of the situation.
"Go somewhere where there's power, that's what I think," said Dcamron Thompson, who is vacationing in the area.
Thompson is from Dallas and he stopped at Gulfway Motel to charge his phone when 12News caught up with him.
"Power Wi-Fi, cold air, it was hot over there when the power had went out, and charge our phones and stuff like that," Thompson said.
Meanwhile, the intersection of Highway 124 and Highway 87 was closed, as crews work to clear the road of fallen power poles and restore power.
High Island volunteer firefighters are tasked with keeping those crews safe. Last month, two Entergy contract workers walking on the side of Highway 87 at surfside were hit and killed by a driver who veered off the road.
"We had a bad wreck here, back on June 5, with Entergy workers and were not trying to have that again, we just want to get this up and going as fast as possible," said Loftin.
Officials there told 12News that anyone who attempts to pass through road blockades, will be turned around.
