TQEQ investigating Thursday spill at Beaumont truck stop

The spilled substance is being removed for "characterization and disposal."

BEAUMONT, Texas — Texas officials are investigating a hazmat spill discovered Thursday at a Beaumont truck stop.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, on Thursday afternoon, investigated a substance that appears to have spilled from a semi-trailer parked a the Petro Travel Center truck stop in Beaumont.

The spilled substance is being removed  for "characterization and disposal" on Friday by a contractor hired by the truck stop, according to the TCEQ.

The TCCEQ will then review the information submitted by the contractor when they are finished..

Beaumont firefighters spent several hours Thursday at the Petro Travel Center at Walden Rd. and Interstate 10 dealing with the spill.

At one point Beaumont Police told people to avoid the area around the truck stop.

The spill was described by fire chief Earl White as a spill of "hazardous pellets."
