PORT ARTHUR, Texas — The Greater Port Arthur Chamber of Commerce announced its newest member of the Board of Directors today.
Dr. Mark Porterie, superintendent of Port Arthur Independent School District, has joined the chamber as one of its newest board members.
Dr. Porterie has served as superintendent of PAISD since January 2014. He is the first superintendent in the district’s history to be named Region 5 Superintendent of the Year, according to PAISD's site.
Throughout his career at PAISD, Dr. Porterie has held several roles, including teacher, assistant principal, principal, assistant to the superintendent, assistant superintendent, deputy superintendent, and interim superintendent.
As the district’s top educator, Dr. Porterie has overseen the passage of a $195 million bond, which funded the construction of new schools and the renovation of others, according to the district.
He led the transformation of Booker T. Washington Elementary School into a K-2 campus and DeQueen Elementary into a 3rd-5th grade campus to improve the reading skills of students, according to the district’s website.
"With his deep commitment to education and community growth, Superintendent Porterie brings valuable insights and leadership that will help drive our mission forward," said the chamber in a social media update. "His dedication to shaping the future of Port Arthur's students aligns perfectly with our vision to create a stronger, more vibrant community."
