Gov. Abbott: Nearly half a million jobs, employment opportunities available in Texas

After calling some of the companies, many of them said they weren't hiring until after the pandemic was over.

BEAUMONT, Texas — We know many of you want to get back to work as soon as you can. According to Gov. Greg Abbott, 481,000 jobs are supposedly open and are ready to be filled.

That's why when Gov. Abbott referred Texans to the website Workintexas.com, we checked it out to see how many of those jobs were here in Southeast Texas.

After entering a local zip code number into the search bar, almost 500 job listings appear. It sounds great, but when 12News reporter Mckensie Hinkle started calling some of those companies and organizations, many of them said they weren't hiring until after the pandemic was over.

"Yes this is mostly after the pandemic, and we have to remember that we are still under the governors declaration of stay home, be around a certain number of people, only work if you are declared essential,” said Pamela Wise.

Wise is with the Southeast Texas Workforce Solutions. She said some places are waiting it out. Places like Lamar University, Kindred Hospice Services, Boutte's Boudoin in Lumberton and Guitar Center Stores are a few examples.

"A lot of employers have their essential workers on site and are doing what needs to be done during the crisis," Wise said.

Now, if you run across these jobs, don't get discouraged. There are a good number of employers that are hiring right now, places like TxDOT, Target, H-E-B and Walmart, to name a few. And most of these corporations need delivery drivers.

"Call us about jobs that are open right now. There are employers who are hiring. Let us know if you have training needs. There are a lot of online training tools that you can take advantage of," Wise said.

Wise said their main goal is to help all of Southeast Texas get back in the workforce in a safe and healthy manner.
