PORT ARTHUR, Texas — A GoFundMe has been set up to help the family of a man who died after an incident with Port Arthur Police Thursday morning.
Shortly before 5 a.m. officers responded to the 800 block of San Jacinto Avenue after receiving a call about a family disturbance, according to a Port Arthur Police Department release.
When officers got to the scene, they were "encountered" by a 28-year-old man. The man's family has identified him as Jovanny Vanegas.
"He treated everyone he meet with the utmost respect," Israel Vanegas, Jovanny Vanegas' brother, said in a statement to 12News. "He meant a tremendous amount to us."
During the encounter, a struggle ensued, according to the release. At this time, it is unclear what happened during the struggle.
Officers took Jovanny Vanegas into custody, and he began to show signs of "medical distress." Medical personnel was called to the scene and he was taken to the Medical Center of Southeast Texas where he later died.
Jovanny Vanegas' death has taken a huge toll on his family.
Israel Vanegas said his brother was a, "loving, caring, humble guy." Jovanny Vanegas is described as a man who would give someone in need the shirt off his back.
"He would always make sure everyone was okay and if we have eaten throughout the day," Israel Vanegas said.
Jovanny Vanegas' loved ones describe him as a beloved and hard-working man who was full of life. He leaves behind his mother, older sister, younger brother, unborn daughter, and countless friends, according to the GoFundMe.
The family is asking anyone who knew, loved, or cared about Jovanny Vanegas to donate to help cover funeral expenses. They said they appreciate any amount, large or small.
The Texas Rangers are leading the investigation. The officers involved were placed on administrative leave while the investigation is in progress.
