BEAUMONT, Texas — Texas Gas Service and CenterPoint Energy are using money the public has donated through their utility bills to keep heat on in many Southeast Texas homes.
The businesses then gave the money to Catholic Charities of Southeast Texas to disperse to those in need.
The link to apply is here.
It is a choice on your bill to pay an extra dollar to help those in need. And with winter on it's way, this money will go a long way in keeping you and your family warm.
President of Catholic Charities Carol Fernandez says she encourages residents to apply.
"We refer to our services as hardship assistance," Fernandez said.
Texas Gas Service and CenterPoint Energy have given thousands of dollars in grants to Catholic Charities to help pay utility bills for those struggling.
"It's typically for those families or individuals who are having a temporary situation," she said.
This assistance is in perfect time for the winter bills.
"Everybody's turning up that thermostat to try and keep it warmer in the house. And that just means the bills are climbing and climbing," Fernandez said.
So, who qualifies?
First priority is given to seniors, those with disabilities, homes with children and low-income families.
"We just wanna pass on as many resources to our tenants, and anyone who follows the Beaumont housing authority Facebook page. So, we think gas assistance is something people need. Especially, it's getting colder," she said.
Now the amount of help available for Texas Gas customers is different than CenterPoint Customers and the aid only applies to your gas bill.
Any Southeast Texas family who meets the criteria can call Catholic Charities Southeast Texas directly.
"We're gonna get an influx of thousands of calls of people who need help with their utility bills, with their gas bills specifically," Fernandez said.
Catholic Charities is asking all non-profits who help with bill assistance to spread the word about their funding.
