BURKEVILLE, Texas — Newton County deputies and Texas game wardens found the body of a man from Call who was last seen in the water Tuesday evening at a lodge a half mile west of Texas Highway 87 about 13 miles north of Burkeville.
The victim has been identified as Decorian Shaquil Smith, 31, from Call, Texas, according to Sheriff Robert Burby.
He was reported missing at about 5 p.m. after last being seen "going into the water" at the Scrappin Valley Lodge, according to Newton County Sheriff Burby.
Texas Game Wardens and Newton County deputies searched for the man Tuesday evening and resumed Wednesday morning at 8 a.m., according to Burby.
Game wardens were in charge of the search and considered it as a recovery operation because of how much time had passed since the man was last seen in the water, Burby told 12News Wednesday morning.
Divers from the Beauregard Parish Sheriff’s Office assisted in the recovery efforts.
