PORT ARTHUR — Funeral arrangements have been set for the man killed in an officer-involved shooting in Port Arthur. Friends and relatives will gather to remember Shayne Lyons, 35, at Rock Island Baptist Church at 549 W. 11th Street in Port Arthur at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12. The funeral was originally set to be held at Moody-Harris Funeral Home.

Port Arthur Police said in a news release that an officer attempted to stop and detain Lyons in the 1600 block of Kansas Avenue near Rev. Raymond Scott Avenue Friday afternoon, Dec. 28. Police said Lyons was walking in the roadway and carrying a large weapon.

The officer told the man multiple times to drop his weapon before he opened fire, Port Arthur Police spokesperson Matt Bulls said in the news release. A source told 12News the weapon may have been a machete.

In a Port Arthur police press conference on Monday, Dec. 31, District Attorney Bob Wortham said the pack of cigarettes taken from the man's pocket was sent to a lab and tested positive for PCP. The Port Arthur Police Department put the officer on paid leave.

Andre Molo, Lyon's brother, told 12News he believes his brother should still be alive.

"Why did he have to shoot that many times?" Molo said.

Molo said Lyons was a father of five who worked as a substitute teacher in Port Arthur.

"He was nothing but a gentle giant and he was very passive person," said Molo.

The case has been handed over to prosecutors and the Texas Rangers and is expected to eventually be given to a grand jury.
