"They can't always get to where we are"| Fish Outreach Ministries sets up temporary shower for those experiencing homelessness

Apostle Dr. Sheila Johnson encourages organizations to work together to make sure resources are shared with those in need.

PORT ARTHUR, Texas — A non-profit has stepped in to help the people who were forced out of a homeless encampment site on 42nd Street near the Twin City Walmart.

"Fish Outreach Ministries" set up a temporary shower for those experiencing homelessness on Saturday, December 16, 2023 at the "Sky is the Limit" learning center located on 32ND Street in Port Arthur.

Police showed up and told people to leave the private property. The owner of the land plans to sell.

About a dozen people had been staying at the site and many struggled to find a place to go.

Organizers made the facility available, no questions asked. They also served a hot meal.

Apostle Dr. Sheila Johnson says it's the least they can do.

"They can't always get to where we are, so today, my son, he was out riding out. He found them. Different people. He offered them a shower and a hot meal and he brought them here. It doesn't matter where they are. We find them in the city and we're more than happy to help them."

Johnson says she also strives to offer uplifting words and encouragement.

She encourages organizations to work together to make sure resources are shared with those in need.

Last week, the city said it would use grant money, through Legacy and Catholic Charities, to help those who recently were "forced out" from the encampment.
