Firefighters contain fire at septic tank company near Silsbee

TCEQ officials have been monitoring the air quality and water runoff from the resin that was burning.

SILSBEE, Texas — Firefighters in Silsbee have contained a fire at Clearstream Wastewater Systems.

TCEQ officials have been monitoring the air quality and water runoff from the resin that was burning.

"For the public there was no hazard vapors or anything that would cause any issues as far as breathing," said Silsbee Fire and Rescue Chief Robin Jones.

Silsbee firefighters are still investigating what caused the massive fire at the facility.

"We'll be here most of the night monitoring it and working the hot spots and hopefully we can get in there sometime in the morning and find out what happened," said Jones.

Jones says that about 15 agencies spent Wednesday evening working to extinguish the flames.

First responders spent hours spraying foam on the facility along Highway 96 and old Evadale Road.

Firefighters on the scene have told 12News that so far no injuries have been reported.

However, some firefighters had to be transferred to nearby hospitals due to heat exhaustion after working hours in the intense heat.

Jones was also concerned about the air quality was safe as well as the water.

"We're monitoring the water runoff because of the resin that was in the water. We do have a company that is coming to vacuum up the water and do the hazmat part of it, but we did block off all the ditches and everything but we contained all the water," said Jones.

There were firefighters from Lumberton, Kountze, Saratoga and Beaumont assisting in fighting the fire.

A large column of thick black smoke could be seen billowing into the sky from the fire.
