'We're here for you' | FEMA offering assistance to those who have damage from recent storms

The first half of 2024 brought Southeast Texans a seemingly endless onslaught of severe weather followed by a hurricane.

BEAUMONT, Texas — Help is on the way for Southeast Texans who are struggling to bounce back from storms.

FEMA is offering disaster assistance for people who had damage from the spring storms and from Hurricane Beryl.

You can qualify whether you're a homeowner or a renter and even if you don't have insurance.

The first half of 2024 brought Southeast Texans a seemingly endless onslaught of severe weather followed by a hurricane. It left many still in recovery mode.

"Hands are going up, 'Oh my lord, what do I do? I've been affected by both of these disasters!'," said FEMA Regional Spokesperson Latanga Hopes.

She says they are here to help all Southeast Texans who were affected by severe weather.

"We've just recently reopened our disaster recovery centers: Jasper area, Newton, I think there's also another one in Tyler," Hopes said.

There's only one month left to apply for assistance if you are a homeowner or renter impacted by storms between April 26 and June 5.

People affected by Hurricane Beryl in Jasper, Chambers, Jefferson, Galveston and Orange Counties can also qualify for help.

"If you incur damages on the first one, apply for that first, that's where the tornadic activity, the flooding. If you then incurred damages from Beryl, complete a second application," said Hopes.

Appointments aren't necessary and you can go to any FEMA disaster recovery center for help, according to Hopes.

"Bring your ID. Bring something that verifies your address where you live. It's a very calm process we'll walk you through it," she told 12News.

Your photos will be important to qualifying for assistance. Hopes says FEMA's focus is on meeting your basic needs.

"So if you had a big, beautiful refrigerator, and you could have got shaved ice, or you get ice cubes, we're probably going to provide you with, we end up in that situation with money to get a new refrigerator," said Hopes.

"We're here for you. So take advantage of this opportunity while it's being presented and let us help you with their recovery," Hopes told 12News.
