TEXAS, USA — Colton Havard and Chuck Havard announced that starting on January 1, 2025 Jasper and Newton County Sheriff’s Offices will join the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods.

Project Safe Neighborhoods, launched in 2001, is a nationwide initiative that is focused on bringing local, state and federal law enforcement agencies and prosecutors together to identify and combat violent crime in communities, according to a social media update from the Newton County Sheriff elect Colton Havard.

"We would also like to thank United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas, Damien Diggs and his staff for the invitation and appreciate his dedication and determination to help fight the war on drugs and other violent criminals in our counties," said Colton Havard in a social media update.

PSN is coordinated by the U.S. Attorneys’ Offices in the 94 federal judicial districts throughout the 50 states and U.S. territories. It is customized to account for local violent crime problems and resources.

According to a news release, a major goal of PSN is to incorporate research and data analysis, and lessons learned from other violent crime reduction initiatives, to inform its decision-making on the most effective violence reduction strategies.

This is a developing story. We will update with more if and when we receive more confirmed information.
