Family of missing Jasper man uses cellphone app to track him, discover his body in the woods

The sheriff said he does believe the incident is a murder.

JASPER — The Jasper County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a body was found in the woods north of Jasper.

Sheriff Mitch Newman and his deputies arrived on scene and found the body after the sheriff's office received a call about a possible homicide about 9:20 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 7.

The sheriff said he does believe the incident is a murder.

The man's body, later identified as 22-year-old Christopher Spikes of Jasper, was found Friday evening by a family member on Hi-Trutt Road, just off Highway 96 North, Sheriff Newman said.

Spikes had been missing for about a day when family members used a tracking app in his cellphone to find his body.

Spikes' body was taken to the medical examiner's office in Beaumont where Justice of the Peace Daniel Whitton ordered an autopsy.

Sheriff Newman said this is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office at (409) 384-5417.
