JASPER, Texas — A family in Jasper has lost most of their home after a fire burned through it Monday morning.
Around 9 a.m. Beech Grove Volunteer Fire Department responded to a house fire on County Road 105 in Jasper. When firefighters arrived they found a mobile home had been engulfed in fire, according to Beech Grove Fire Chief James Gunter.
BGVFD responded with one fire engine, 2 tankers and 7 firefighters. They called for mutual aid from Tri-Community Fire Department and Jasper Volunteer Fire Department, Gunter said.
Firefighters began to attack the fire from the inside of the home and the back of it, near an add on structure.
They were able to stop the spread of the fire quickly, according to Gunter. No family members where in the home at the time of the fire.
The homeowner had built a fire in a wood heater early in the morning and then left to take her 6 and 8-year-old sons to school. When she returned she found fire engulfing the add on, and it was spreading to the home.
The exact cause of the fire is still undetermined, but investigators think it was accidental, according to Gunter.
The homeowner said that two dogs were in the house. She was able to find one, but the second one was missing. Firefighters found the remains of the second dog.
The family had no insurance and lost everything. Their Christmas presents were in the house under the tree and were destroyed, according to Gunter.
BGVFD is teaming up with the Beech Grove Baptist Church to hold a fundraiser for the family on Saturday, December 16 at the church located at 10008 FM 777 in Jasper from 11 a.m. until they are sold out.
They will be selling fried catfish, sliced beef sandwiches and link wraps. All are served with fries and a drink.
Cash donations are also being accepted Saturday at the fundraiser. Checks should be made payable to Austin or Jade Weaver.
