Family battles flooding in Jasper County

The aftermath of rains last week across Southeast Texas has left one neighborhood road underwater, forcing homeowners to use boats in order to leave the house.

JASPER COUNTY — More than three inches of rain pounded Jasper County last week.

Flooding has forced dozens of families to adapt and battle the elements surrounding their homes.

Along County Road 022, 20 miles west of Jasper, one section of road has created a big problem.

"It's been pretty hard, we're taking the boat in and out," says homeowner Pamela Odom. "Some of us have kids back here and the water seems to just stay where it's at."

Water has risen to a point where homeowners have to ditch their vehicles and hop into boats to travel down the road.

Even worse, boats are not able to maneuver through a small section of about 300 yards, meaning this unfortunate trek gets more troublesome, forcing people to walk across.

"We're probably from where we are about a mile and half from our house, says Odom. "It takes about 30 to 45 minutes to get to the vehicle on the other side of the water and then to our house."

Mother nature prevented Odom's two daughters from getting to school last week as well, with the Jasper ISD bus having to wait near U.S. Highway 255 almost two miles away.

She tells us attempting to put her kids in danger isn't worth it.

"Coming out here in the dark and taking the kids across the water, as I said you have to walk through this first hole," says Odom. "I don't feel like at 5 a.m., your kid should be walking across the water, especially rushing like it is."

There have been no reports that the Sam Rayburn Dam will release water into the Angelina River.

However, if it does Odom fears what the result could be for the Neches River which is connected to the Angelina River.

"It does look like it would come over the banks at the house which is going to push water down our driveway and into our yard," says Odom. "That stays there for several weeks sometimes due to it not having anywhere else to go."

There is some good news for Odom and other families in the area, rain chances look low for the next few days.

Yet, it could take a couple more weeks before the water levels recede.
