BEAUMONT, Texas — ExxonMobil Beaumont Chemical Plant celebrated 39 years of being recognized as a star participant within the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) on Wednesday.
The VPP recognizes employers and workers in the private industry and federal agencies who have implemented effective safety and health management systems, according to a news release from Exxon Mobil.
They also recognize those who maintain injury and illness rates below
national Bureau of Labor Statistics averages for their respective industries.
ExxonMobil Beaumont Chemical Plant Manager Michael Mustian tells 12News during the hustle and bustle of day to day life, it's important to stop and celebrate significant accomplishments.
"Today is about thanking the organization, and sharing with the community the fantastic work that we're doing at the site that keeps people safe inside of our limits, and the community safe outside of our walls," he said.
VPP participants serve as models for other employers, workers and unions by
operating excellent safety and health management programs, according to the release.
“We are honored to receive this distinguishing recognition within the program for our facility’s display of safety excellence,” Mustian said. “Safety
comes first in all that we do, and that has been displayed through the chemical plant’s continued participation in the VPP as a star site.”
To participate in the program, employers must submit an application to OSHA and undergo a rigorous on-site evaluation by a team of safety and health professionals.
VPP participants are re-evaluated every three to five years to remain in the programs.
