Experts explain how to properly maintain your vehicle during freezing temperatures

There are a few basic checks you can do to make sure you aren't stranded in the cold.

BEAUMONT, Texas — Experts are weighing in to show how properly maintaining your vehicle can make a difference during freezing temperatures.

There are a few basic checks you can do to make sure you aren't stranded in the cold. Everything from checking your tire pressure to your lights can make a world of a difference.

The professionals at Cortez Car Care gave some of the do's and don'ts when it comes to taking care of your car.

A few basic pre-driving checks could mean the difference between getting to your destination and possibly ending up stranded in the freezing cold for hours.

Joshua Cortez recommends checking the tread in your tires and operation of all of your lights, especially hazard and brake lights.

You should also make sure your windshield wiper blades function properly and under the hood, checking coolant levels and ensuring a 50/50 mix of water and coolant.

Additionally checking your car battery for signs of corrosion or fault  that could cause it to die when you least expect it.

"So the weather drops, you get stranded somewhere, lights aren't working, people may not be able to focus on the road and they don't see you clearly. Let's just say something as simple as your lights aren't working, that's an accident that could have been prevented," said Cortez.

Cortez also reminds drivers to be patient when warming their cars refrain from using hot water on iced windows.

If your vehicle doors are completely iced over, Cortez recommends utilizing a blow dryer or other form of heat to prevent damaging to your door.

He says while doing these checks are essential, the safest thing you can do as a driver during this winter weather is to stay indoors and off the roads unless it's necessary.
