Former Beaumont mayor Evelyn Lord died at her home Friday, December 13.
Lord passed peacefully after a brief battle with illness according to her obituary.
As a politician Lord was a trail blazer, becoming the first woman ever elected as mayor of Beaumont in 1990.
After breaking that barrier Lord made quite the impression, and was again elected in 1992, 2000, and 2002.
Outside of her four terms as mayor, Lord stayed committed to helping the Southeast Texas community.
Lord also served as chairman of the Spindletop Centennial Commission, served on the boards of the Boy Scouts Three Rivers Council, and created the Evelyn M. Lord Teen Court.
Evelyn was also the recipient of many awards according to her obituary, including the Boy Scouts Silver Beaver award, the Athena Award given by the Beaumont Chamber of Commerce, and Man of the Year at the Neches River Festival.
Alongside her groundbreaking politics, Lord was a woman who simply wanted to help make her adopted home of Beaumont, Texas the best it could be.
Her tireless work within the community will forever remain a testament to that.
