The Texas Department of Transportation is now planning to reconstruct and widen the corridor of I-10 located from Hamshire Road to FM 365 in Jefferson County, which covers almost seven miles.
On Thursday, TXDOT held a public meeting in Hamshire-Fannett to receive input from people around the community.
W.C. Vandiver is one of the many people who attended the meeting and lives across from Gator Country on FM 365. He tells 12News the project should help out with traffic congestion near his home.
"There's too many wrecks in the stretch of Beaumont and truck traffic is tremendous here." Vandiver said.
TXDOT is planning to widen from four lanes to six lanes between Hamshire Road and FM 365 on I-10.
Three lanes on each side of the highway that could help drivers reach their destination at a better pace. "The traffic volumes on the section of I10, has increased dramatically within the last couple of years." said Sarah Dupre with TXDOT.
TXDOT has also proposed improvements like replacing and widen the bridges at:
- North Fork Taylor Bayou
- South Fork Taylor Bayou
- Other water crossings within the project limits.
The estimated cost of the project is 85 million dollars and construction is set to begin in late 2017.
