BEAUMONT, Texas — Pet owners in Beaumont might only have to wait a few more weeks before a new dog park is officially opened.
The long awaited play area is being added to a section of Rogers Park in Beaumont west end. City leaders say all that's left to do is add the grass.
In 2019 Holli Peterson started a change.org petition to add an area for dogs at Rogers Park and over 2,800 people agreed.
In just a few weeks, that area will be open.
"Me and my grandma came to see if it was open. But it's not open yet. So we'll be waiting on it," said Jordan Braxton, a young Beaumont resident.
Braxton is patiently waiting for the grand opening of the new dog park.
"I look forward to watching my grandparent's dog like run around and see it for the first time running in a dog park," he said.
The new dog park will have two enclosures side by side surrounded by six foot tall fences.
"Basically the park is divided in half. one side is for the larger dogs to rump and play. and the other side is mainly for the smaller dogs. so they can't get hurt by the playfulness of the larger dogs," said Director of Parks & Green Space Management Kenneth Raggette.
Raggette, who has two dogs, is excited for this new play area.
"Place for the dogs to run around hide and play. As well as citizens who are out here as well. Of course you mentioned the water fountains, you know their good for the kids and adults and animals. Also we have everything for you to keep the park clean," he said.
The park offers a perfect place for pets and people to mix and mingle.
"It makes it better so everyone can bring their dog. You know some places it's certain dogs can't come and some can. So all the dogs can meet and all the kids can go over there and play with them," Beaumont Resident Haley Gilder.
Dogs must be at least six months old to enter and up to date on all their vaccinations.
The city is just waiting on the grass to grow so the park should be open by the end of the month. The city tells 12News they have a special grand opening in the works.
