'Dog Days of Summer' lets pet lovers take a Beaumont shelter pup out for the day

"We've had a couple of people fall in love with the animal they take out for the day."

BEAUMONT, Texas — At Beaumont Animal Care there's a new way to help the shelter's dogs find new adoptive homes.

Beaumont Animal Care wants Southeast Texans to know that even if you can't adopt right now, you can still help with its "Dog Days of Summer" program.

"Doggie day out is really great for getting people involved and helping them find homes for some of our stray animals," said Vivianna Lopez, of Beaumont Animal Care

For dog lovers in Southeast Texas the shelter wants to encourage pet lovers to participate in the summer program.

"We know not everyone has the space or the budget to take in another animal permanently, that can be really expensive," Lopez said. "So doggie day out, it's a great way for people to help get media exposure to these animals that need homes."

It's a learning experience for those wanting to try out pet ownership for a day but it's also beneficial for the dogs.

"The animals spend a lot of their day in their kennel until they're either adopted, fostered or pulled by a rescue," Lopez explains. "So this is a really great way for the dogs to get more socialization."

"It's also really great to get more information on the animal and we get a lot of adorable pictures too," she added.

The program kicked off just last month and Lopez says its been a hit

"We had probably about three or four people come take dogs out for the day, that first weekend after posting," Lopez said. "It was our busiest day. I think that day, probably about nine dogs went."

It's quick and easy to sign up

"No appointments necessary to take a dog out, just come in anytime during our normal business hours, we'll help you find a good fit," she said. "Any dog who goes out for the day, we just ask that they're back about an hour before closing Tuesday through Friday, at four and then Saturdays at three."

And you never know how the program will affect you. There are often happy endings all thanks to the program.

"We've had a couple of people fall in love with the animal they take out for the day, they decide to foster it a little longer," Lopez said. "And some of those Foster's ended up turning into adoption. So of course, that's always a win."

This is a developing story. We will update with more if and when we receive more confirmed information.
