"Koasati Heritage Day"| Coushatta Tribe celebrates Native American Heritage Month with tribal dances, cuisine and meeting tribal princesses

KINDER, La. — The Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana is hosting their annual  "Koasati Heritage Day" to celebrate Native American Heritage Month.

The celebration will include traditional dances, language preservation, Coushatta cuisine, storytelling of tribal legends and the opportunity to meet tribal princesses. 

The event will be held at the Coushatta Conference Center Ballroom on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., located at 777 Coushatta Drive in Kinder, Louisiana, according to the news release. 

Event Highlights:

  • Attendees will witness traditional dance sequences and meet tribal princesses.
  • Guests can experience first-hand intricate basket weaving techniques using materials like white oak, sedge grass and rivercane.
  • Vibrant beadwork will be on display. 
  • Storytellers will recount tribal legends that have been passed down through generations.
  • Attendees can learn about the language and passionate initiatives to keep it alive.
  • Guests can buy traditional frybread and other Coushatta cuisine.

Events like the Koasati Heritage Day not only offer a celebration of their heritage, but also raise money that go towards their community. 

The funds go towards sending tribal students to college, making sure they have a bright future and the preservation of their traditions.
