Construction moves forward on controversial housing complex in Port Arthur

Work continues in Port Arthur on a controversial housing complex for senior citizens. A decision on an appeal aimed at stopping the project was handed down just last month, allowing for the continued construction of the Edison Square housing project.

The complex will soon have 128 units for senior citizens. Neighbors say they're excited to see it completed.

"It'll be a nice beautiful place. They're doing it pretty fast," said Nathan Adams.

He lives a block away from the complex. Adams says he’s looking forward to new neighbors. His childhood friend, Sedrick Edison, thinks having more senior citizens in the neighborhood will be good for the area.

"I think it's going to be a beautiful thing for the seniors,” said Edison.

While Adams and Edison have no issues with the project, the complex has been met with opposition since it's start.

Neighbors were once concerned with low income housing popping up in their backyards. A lawsuit over the zoning of the land was filed in 2013 aimed at stopping the project completely.

An appeal decision handed down just last month has construction continuing. Edison says he thinks there will be positives to the project.

“Maybe it'll keep some of the crime rate down because seniors do watch,” said Edison.

As for the construction noise, Adams says it’s served as an alarm clock.

The group wanting to stop the project has a chance to file motion for a rehearing. Their deadline is August 12th.
