Coast Guard suspends search for man last seen on tugboat near Sabine Pass Sunday night

"The tough decision of suspending a search is vetted through many channels and is never taken lightly."

SABINE PASS, Texas — The search has been suspended for a man who went missing from a tugboat in the Gulf of Mexico near Sabine Pass.

Crews with the U.S. Coast Guard searched for a combined 23 hours over 206 square miles for the missing tugboat crew member who was last seen Sunday night at about 10 p.m. according to the Coast Guard.

The 35-year-old man was last seen on the Smith Invader Tug vessel about one nautical mile off McFaddin National Wildlife Refuge Texas. He was reported missing around 6 a.m. Monday morning.

“The tough decision of suspending a search is vetted through many channels and is never taken lightly,” Lt. Cmdr. Jeffrey Schwind, search and rescue mission coordinator, Sector Houston-Galveston, said. “This search involved close coordination between state and local agencies, and we appreciate their assistance. We send our thoughts and prayers to the man's friends and family during this tough time.”

The identity of the missing man has not been released, but officials said he was wearing a white shirt and black pants when he was last seen. 

The U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Houston, CG Station Sabine, and Jefferson County officials helped with the search and rescue mission.

Search and Rescue ALERT

The Coast Guard, along with local and state responders, is currently searching for a missing 35-year-old male wearing a white shirt and black pants last seen 1 NM off McFaddin National Wildlife Refuge Texas.

He was on the Smith Invader Tug vessel, last seen at 10 PM yesterday (Feb 5) and noted missing 6 AM this morning.

Search and Rescue for person in the water is being conducted by U.S. Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston, U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Houston, CG Station Sabine, and Jefferson County officials.
