PORT ARTHUR, Texas — The city of Port Arthur is considering extending Jimmy Johnson Boulevard to FM 365 all the way FM 365.
Back on June 25, city council members decided to table a vote on a contract with Soutex Surveyors and Engineers of Port Arthur to provide drawings and specifications for the extension of Jimmy Johnson Boulevard.
The plans were to extend Jimmy Johnson Boulevard from The Medical Center of Southeast Texas to FM 365, which would require engineering work.
However, the plan has found new life after making its way on the agenda for Tuesday's city council meeting.
The project is marked "not to exceed the amount of $410,000", and says that funds are available in the Street Improvement Account.
However, Councilman William Lewis says that while he is in support of anything that will bring in more revenue to the city, there are significant problems with the plan.
According to Lewis, much of the land that would need to be developed for the extension is still privately owned, and he hasn't heard about any commitments from the owners.
"Before we do anything we have to have control of that land," said Lewis.
Lewis says that if there is still no commitments by the council meeting tonight, the project should be a moot point.
The motion is filed under "unfinished business" and the fate of the project will be discussed during tonight's meeting starting at 5:30 p.m.
This is a developing story. We will update with more if and when we receive more confirmed information.
