Orange officials ask residents to take survey for '2024 Annual Action Plan'

By completing the survey, residents can contribute to understanding the resources and needs of families in the city.

BEAUMONT, Texas — Officials with the City of Orange are asking for input from residents to help with the city's "Annual Action Plan."

The plan is a yearly update to the city's "Consolidated Plan," which is a three to five year planning document required by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, or HUD, according to the city.

The "Consolidated Plan" sets forth long-term community development goals and strategies.

By completing the survey, residents can contribute to understanding the resources and needs of families in the city.

The City of Orange has a total of $316,000 thanks to a community development block grant.

In previous years, grants like this one, have been used to improve parks like Sunset Park that now has a skateboard park and brand new playground.

Navy Park also saw some upgrades, like a volleyball court, adaptive swing set and a splash pad.

City of Orange Block Grants Administrator Rita Monson says there needs to be more places for teenagers to hang out.

"I mean we know what we would like to see but we need to know what they would like to see. And so this is a part of a 5-year plan. So, year one you may not see what you had on your survey. But year 5 you may start to see 'hey I remember putting that on my survey,'" Monson said.

The deadline to take the survey is on Saturday, December 2, 2023.

The survey is completely anonymous and no personal information is required to be provided while filing out the survey, which officials say should only take 15-20 minutes at most. You will NOT be asked for your name, phone number, home or email address.

12News Kayla Choate went to the streets and asked people what they would like to see come to Orange. Their responses ranged from movie cinemas and drive-ins to a public swimming pool.

However, one mom wants a place to take her children away from the television set.

"Whether it's an ice skating rink or more parks parks. Just something to bring the community together more. And implement more family structure and less, less like screen time for the kids," Brianna Ford said.

Director of Planning and Community Development Kelvin Knauf says he thinks this makes a stronger more vibrant community that people want to not only live and reside in.

"People want to come to and move to and you know it's just really makes Orange a much better place," he said.

Orange City leaders have ideas of their own.

Deputy Director of Planning and Community Development Divon Williams says growing up "we played outside a lot."

"So, we attended a lot of the parks. So to see those continue to be rejuvenated," he said.
