BEAUMONT, Texas — This summer, Beaumont teens have a chance to clock in for a summer job instead of checking out for the whole summer.
As the summer begins, the leader of Beaumont's parks and recreation department want teens to know the city has several openings for summer work in his department.
"This could be some of these kids' first jobs,", said Jimmy Neale, director of parks and rec for the City of Beaumont.
Teens can make a splash as a lifeguard, teach at summer camps, or even have an "un-FORE-gettable" time working on the greens at the Henry Homberg Golf Course.
“You find out what it means to have to be somewhere every morning at 7 a.m., "Neale said. "You've got to be here, and you've got to be committed.”
The department has many lifeguards who started working with the city when they were 15 or 16-years-old and now work on their summer break as juniors or seniors in college Neale said.
These jobs allow teens the opportunity to test out which careers they want to pursue he said.
"I think if someone wants to be a teacher, come work summer camp," Neale suggested. "You really find out if you still want to be a teacher or not when you show up here Monday through Friday for eight weeks and work with kids."
If teaching isn’t your route, lifeguarding is another way to go, especially if you need your certification.
“In order to become a lifeguard, you've got to get certified." Neale said. "We provide that course," he said.
The training classes start in early May so teens should sign up right away.
