Chambers County breaks ground on new judicial center

The new building will include a 360 bed jail, which is more than double the current facility, among many other things.

CHAMBERS COUNTY, Texas — Chambers County broke ground on Tuesday, August 7 for a $160,000,000 Justice and Judicial Center.

The new building will include a 360 bed jail, which is more than double the current facility, a 3-story judicial complex with three courtrooms and offices for the county judge and offices for the District Attorney, district judges, county attorney, county clerks and district clerk.

The existing courthouse, which was built in 1937, will not be torn down. Instead it will be used for other county officers.

It's expected that the project will take two and half years to complete.

This is part of a public-private partnership with Americus Holdings who is funding the building of the facility. The county will then pay an annual amount to them until it is paid off, similar to a mortgage.

The county commissioners approved moving forward with the contract when they voted on April 12, 2022.
