Central High School's future to be decided soon by Beaumont ISD

A Central High School parent is hoping her sophomore son will graduate from Central High School's main campus.

Some parents with children at Central High School are expressing frustration. The future of the campus is still undecided.

Lola Daniel says she has been contacting the school district to hear about the future plans.

"We're not [hearing back] and that's unfortunate," Daniel said.

The last time the district held a meeting with parents on the campuses closure was back in September. The meeting came in the wake of the news that Central's main building was contaminated with mold.

Three months later, short term repairs are still on-going.

"That's what saddens me as I'm quite sure it does other parents,” Daniel said.

Possible long-term options for Central include repairing the main building, tearing it down and building a new one, or building an entirely new Central High School for 1,300 students.

Beaumont ISD says their estimated cost is $91.3 million, with the project subject to passing a bond.

BISD is also considering merging Central and Ozen High School students or building a new combined Central and Ozen High School.

An estimate for that cost is $137.9 million and is also subject to passing a bond.
Smith Middle School could also be disbanded in the summer before the 2018-2019 school year, with students rezoned to multiple middle schools and SMS would be converted back into a high school.

Daniel’s favorite option is having students return to Central’s main building.

"If they cannot attempt to get back to Central I hope they're coming up with a plan better than the one they have now," Daniel said.

The next scheduled Board of Managers meeting will be held on December 14.

The district says they will make a decision soon regarding Central High School.

In an email to 12 News, the district says all factors are currently being taken into consideration such as the current facility, the impact on the community, the UIL timeline for realignment and the financial impact on the district.
