Beloved Buna ISD employee loses everything in Wednesday morning house fire

McMahon says anything can help her family right now, including clothing, necessary items and funds to help get back on their feet.

JASPER COUNTY, Texas — A Buna Independent School District employee and her family lost everything after their house burned down Wednesday morning.

Sharron McMahon, a beloved paraprofessional, was at work when her son called and told her their home was on fire after toast became stuck in a toaster.

"I got a phone call today while I was at work, and my son was on the other line and told me that he had put a piece of toast in the toaster and it got stuck," said McMahon. "He's special needs, high level and he couldn’t get it out, so I came home."

When McMahon made it back home, she says the fire was already spreading.

"But by the time I came home, he said that it had started on fire," she said. "I immediately called 911, and by the time they got here, my house was in flames."

Buna Volunteer Fire Department along with the assistance of other fire departments responded after receiving a call about the house fire. The home is a total loss.

"House is gone, but I thank God my son is alive," said McMahon.

Buna ISD superintendent and other district employees were there for McMahon at the scene of the fire for support.

"I've had so many of my employees, superintendent, everyone, different ones, coming out showing their love," said McMahon. "I really appreciate it."

The three people who lived in the house are now displaced.

McMahon says anything can help her family right now, including clothing, necessary items and funds to help get back on their feet.

"Any donations, any items, clothing, just whatever they can help me with," she said. "Money, monetary, anything can help, I'd appreciate it."

Despite the devastating loss, McMahon is thankful that her son made it out alive and everyone is safe.

"We're alive. My son, like I said, I thank God for him," she said. "He did what I've taught him, as far as anytime something like this happens, you know, get out the house, call me, and he did all the above."

This is a developing story. We will update with more if and when we receive more confirmed information.
