Brutal attack leaves Beaumont mother paralyzed, she needs a car modified for her disability

In August 2019, Brittany Morris' ex-boyfriend stabbed her eight times. The attack left her paralyzed.

BEAUMONT, Texas — Brittany Morris is a single mother of twin boys. In August 2019, her ex-boyfriend stabbed her eight times.

The brutal attack left her paralyzed and she now relies on a wheelchair.

"Once I made it to the ICU, the doctor told me I wouldn't be able to walk again," Morris said. "Well there is a God, and with God, anything is possible."

The Beaumont mother said the recovery process and having to learn to live life as with paralysis was tough, but she got through it for her sons. She is a resilient survivor and refused to let her disability define her.

"I wasn't going to let anything stop me from parenting," Morris said. "I really had no support. My mom's side, my dad's side, nobody comes around."

After the attack, Morris went on to graduate from the Lamar Institute of Technology and has since gotten her driver’s license.

The mother is currently facing another obstacle. She is trying to jump-start her life and needs money to buy a car.

“If I had my own vehicle, I would be able to be a little more independent,” Morris said. “I wouldn't have to have the providers so long. I wouldn't have to have the provider run around everywhere. I would want to do it myself.”

Morris needs a specially outfitted car to get herself around. A non-profit organization called American Lift Aids is willing to make the modifications.

"To every van conversion there are two parts," Raquel Roy, with American Lift Aids, said. "One if the chassis, that's the van before it ever gets converted. That's the one cost. Then one here is the second cost. It's the actual conversion, pretty much about the same cost as the van."

The state will pay for the modifications, but Morris has to buy her vehicle.

Morris started a campaign on SpotFund. So far, she has raised more than $2,000.

The amount raised is only a fraction of the $50,000 Morris needs for the right kind of car.

Money that anyone donates will go directly toward Morris' new car. She said she will use any leftover funds to help her children.
