Bridge City football player injured Friday night could go home Tuesday if he continues to improve

Abraham Munguia was flown to Texas Children's Hospital in Houston after being injured in Friday night's game against Silsbee.

BRIDGE CITY, Texas — The Bridge City High School football player injured in last Friday night's game against Silsbee is continuing to improve in a Houston hospital.

Abraham "Mungy" Munguia was injured in the fourth quarter of Bridge City's game against Silsbee Friday night at Larry Ward Stadium in Bridge City.

The game was called following Munguia's injury with Silsbee leading 33-7.

Munguia was shoved once he was out of bounds and over the bench. All of his momentum and body weight, came down on his head according to Holly Bush, a family friend.

He was taken by ambulance to a helicopter to be flown to Texas Children's Hospital in Houston

By Monday Munguia was "10 times better" his sister, Brenda Munguia told 12News. His family sent 12News a smiling photo of Munguia in his hospital bed still wearing a neck brace and flashing a thumbs up to the camera.

He has even been able to take a few steps and started to walk with the help of doctors his sister said.

She says he will soon be able to walk on his own and if he continues to recover well he may be able to leave Texas Children's Hospital on Tuesday.

Munguia would like to thank Bry, an athletic trainer, the Bush and Oceguera families, the Bridge City community and his mom and family for all their help and support his sister told 12News on Monday.

His injuries initially consisted of the loss of feeling and movement below his neck. He never lost consciousness, and was coherent enough to respond to any questions being asked according to Bush.

The Bridge City athletic trainer stabilized his head, and remained like that for about an hour, as they waited for a mode of transport to be put into place to get Munguia to the hospital.

When Munguia first arrived at the hospital, he couldn’t feel below his neck, but could slightly wiggle his fingers and toes. Throughout the night, he began regaining sensation and strength in his upper body. He was able to lift both of his arms several hours after the injury occurred, Bush tells 12News.

If you would like to help Munguia and his family, a t-shirt fundraiser has been organized. You can find the information on how to order a t-shirt here.
