Beaumont ISD seeing surge of illnesses among students, asks parents to monitor children for symptoms

The district notified parents of the surge of sick students in a message sent to out on Wednesday.

BEAUMONT, Texas — The Beaumont Independent School District has seen an increase in illnesses among students and the community.

The district notified parents of the surge of sick students in a message sent to parents on Wednesday.

Parents are being asked to closely monitor their children according to the message from BISD.

The district is asking that any student running a fever, vomiting, or experiencing diarrhea be kept home from school and suggesting parents then reach out to their primary care doctor for an evaluation.

"We do need them to stay home. A lot of people don't understand because they'll give a fever reducing medication like Tylenol or ibuprofen. And they think well they don't have a fever now and they can go to school. But they still are contagious and that medication is just reducing the symptoms of fever," said Beaumont ISD Health Service Coordinator, Julie Nezat.

Students must be free of any fever for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication before they can return to school according to the district.

The district is continuing to clean and sanitize "high-touch" areas on its campuses according to the message.

Here's the full text of the message sent to parents by BISD...

Greetings BISD Parent,
We are seeing an increase in illness across the District and throughout the community. In an effort to be proactive and keep everyone healthy, we ask that you please be mindful and monitor your child closely. If your child is running a fever, vomiting, or experiencing diarrhea, please keep him/her home and reach out to your primary care physician for an evaluation. A student must be fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications to return to school. As a District, we will continue to clean and sanitize all high-touch areas. If you have any questions, please contact your campus. Thank you for your help in keeping all of our students safe.
